How long do you wait for a website to load? 2-4 seconds perhaps.

In a study done by Akamai, about half of web users expect a site to load in 2 seconds or less. If it isn’t loaded within 3 seconds, those users tend to abandon the site.

But, why is website load speed so important? What difference does a fraction of a second make?

Think again about the answer.

The answer? It makes a big difference! It affects user experience, search rankings, and even sales and conversions.

A study by Akamai found that:

  • 47% of people expect a web page to load in two seconds or less.
  • 40% will abandon a web page if it takes more than three seconds to load.
  • 52% of online shoppers say quick page loads are important for their loyalty to a site.

A 1-second delay in page load time yields:

  • 11% fewer page views
  • 16% decrease in customer satisfaction
  • 7% loss in conversions (source: Aberdeen Group)

An even more alarming statistic is that 64% of shoppers who are dissatisfied with an online store’s experience & loading time will take their business elsewhere.

For Google, the website loading speed is a major factor affecting a website’s search engine rankings.

To make the web faster and more enjoyable for their own clients Google will reduce the number of crawlers it sends to your site if your server is slower than two seconds.

Google Developers is an online page speed test site which provides some great insights on what you need to do to improve your site’s performance.

You will get a score from 0-100. If you rank above 90, then you’re in good shape. Google can also tell you why your page is loading slowly and can suggest ways of how to improve your website page loading speed.

It’s clear that we all expect quick results whether we’re on a laptop, desktop, tablet, or mobile phone. Think about how you use the internet every day? You’re looking for quick answers and immediate results. And you have little patience.

Amazon found this to be true. It reported increased revenue of 1% for every 100 milliseconds improvement to their site speed.

And, Walmart found a 2% increase in conversions for every 1 second of improvement.

When it comes to well-known and authority sites, people are willing to wait a little longer because they’re an established name.

Unfortunately, for small businesses and start-ups, you don’t always have that luxury. It’s best to be as fast as possible right from the start.

First impressions are vital on the web. Often, they are the last impression.

Your customers and website visitors make an instant judgment about you and your business.

If your website loads fast, you’ve instantly made a strong first impression. If it loads fast, your new visitor is immediately happy and satisfied.

People generally consider fast websites to be professional and reliable. They relate speed to efficiency, trust, and confidence.

That’s why website load speed is your number one priority when it comes to user experience. People visiting your website are looking for something. Give it to them as quickly as possible.
